Problems with Java Monitors

• Semantics of Notify / NotifyAll ???

• Breaks O-O model

  • Threads are controlled by calling functions inside monitor
  • Depend on notification by other threads
  • Multiple monitors can easily lead to deadlock
  • Monitors can easily lead to starvation
  • Global ! knowledge needed to adequately coordinate multiple monitors
