(Back to the main course website)
There will be near-daily multiple-choice quizzes which are open-book, open-notes, open-internet and open-friend (yes you may work together on these; please make sure everyone understands the reasoning behind each answer of course). For these, just look up/figure out the answer to the posted questions and submit a piece of paper (ideally an index card) with your name and answers either at the end of class or under the door of Prof. Mawhorter’s office by noon the day after each lecture that has a quiz. You cannot submit these via email or Piazza! (If you need an exception to this rule please ask; if you are travelling or sick either submit early or ask Prof. Mawhorter ahead of time about your situation if possible.)
There will also be in-class short answer quizzes most weeks on Fridays at the beginning of class. For these you may bring one page of notes (can be double-sided) but you may not use the book or the internet. You may work together to create notes for these, but in class you’ll have to complete the quiz alone. See the “quiz” column on the lectures and readings page for the topics and dates of these quizzes.
Combined, both types of quiz are worth 12% of your grade in the class.
There will be two in-class midterms plus a scheduled final exam:
Sample exams and study guides will be made available as each test approaches. For each exam, you may bring in and reference up to two double-sided pages of notes, and you may collaborate to produce these notes pages. For your own sake, don’t just ask for a friend’s notes page at the last minute; this will be far less effective than making your own, and doing so is an efficient use of studying time.
