# Ethical Debate This week, we will conduct an ethical debate on the topic of deepfake. All the activities should be done during the lab. In the following sections, we will introduce the background of deepfake and describe the activities that you will work on in this week's lab. ## Backgroud Deepfake applies machine learning, especially deep learning, to create images, videos or audios with fake events. For example, deepfake can be used to create synthetic video, where the likeness of one person can be replaced by another person (click [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyiOVUbsPcM) to see an example). The techniques behind deepfake involves training generative neural network architectures, such as autoencoders, or generative adversarial networks (GANs). Deepfake can be used in harmless ways in entertainment contexts. For example, most recently, there is a contestant on [America's Got Talent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPU0WNUzsBo) this summer. However, there are concerns that deepfake can be used to create fake news, synthetic pornography, and misinformation from politicians doing/saying something, see a fake news about Obama [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ54GDm1eL0&t). ## Part 1: Individual study (45 minutes) In this part, you will work on exploring more about deepfake technology and its applications individually. Here are a few links to the articles about deepfake that can help you get started. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepfake - https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-deepfake - https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/jan/13/what-are-deepfakes-and-how-can-you-spot-them In addition to the above listed materials, you should explore more about deepfake by searching it on google, so that you have a comprehensive understanding about it. At the end of your reading, you should be able to answer the following questions: - What is deepfake? - Technically, how to make deepfake? - What is deepfake used for? - How to detect deepfake? ## Part 2: Group discussion (45 minutes) Given that deepfake may be used in bad ways, we would like you to debate the following topic: Deepfake technology should be banned. In this part, we will ask you to form your own debate teams (with four or five persons per team). We will assign a TA for every two teams to coordinate the debate activities. As we have four TAs, we will have four parallel debate sessions. Within each session, the two teams will be randomly assigned as prop, the team that is in favor of banning the deepfake technology and the other team as op, the team against banning the deepfake technology. More specifically, you should prepare the answers for the following questions: - What do you find to be the most convincing argument in favor of banning deepfake? - What do you find to be the most convincing argument against banning deepfake? - Would you recommend a national ban on the development and use of deepfake technology? You will have 45 minutes to prepare for the debate. ## Part 3: Debate After the group discussion and preparation, we will conduct the debate with four parallel sessions. The outcome of the debate is that all of us having a more comprehensive understanding about deepfake and the technology behind it, as well as its applications and countermeasures that can help spot the deepfake products. ## Grade Point Allocations | Part | Feature | Value | |-----------|-------------------------------------------|-----| | Lab | Debate participation | 5 |
