# A6: Project Related Work
**Deadline:** Tuesday, October 25, 2022 @ 11:59 pm PT
Your assignment this week is comprised of three parts: (1) individually read
and review two research papers about authentication (R2) and (2) coordinating
with the other people in your project group, read and summarize three papers
relating to your course project, and (3) working with your project group,
write a related work section for your course project.
### Part 1: Authentication Readings
Select two of the following papers to read and review:
- R. Bhagavatula et al. [Biometric authentication on iphone and android: Usability, perceptions, and influences on adoption](https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4969&context=sis_research). USEC 2015.
- A. De Luca et al. [I Feel Like I’m Taking Selfies All Day! Towards Understanding Biometric Authentication on Smartphones](https://www.medien.informatik.uni-muenchen.de/pubdb/publications/pub/deluca2015chi/deluca2015chi.pdf). CHI 2015.
- K. Reese et al. [A Usability Study of Five Two-Factor Authentication Methods](https://www.usenix.org/system/files/soups2019-reese.pdf). SOUPS 2019.
- J. Colnago et al. [“It’s not actually that horrible”: Exploring Adoption of Two- Factor Authentication at a University](https://doi.org/10.1145/3173574.3174030). CHI 2018.
- S. Mare et al. [A Study of Authentication in Daily Life](https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/soups2016/soups2016-paper-mare.pdf). SOUPS 2016.
For each paper you select, you should write a short (1-page) review containing
the following information:
1. Which paper you read and a 1-2 sentence summary of the paper.
2. A more in-depth outline of the main points of the paper, including the type
of study conducted, data collected, analysis methodology used, and conclusions
drawn.
3. Any limitations you see of this paper.
4. Possible extensions or follow-up projects relating to this work.
5. Your opinion of the paper, primarily, the quality of the ideas and its
potential impact.
Prior to reading your selected papers, I strongly recommend checking out [this
advice](https://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~michaelm/postscripts/ReadPaper.pdf) on
how to read a research paper.
**What to submit** A pdf entitled `r2.pdf` containing your two reviews to
assignment R2: Authentication Readings
### Part 2: Paper Summaries
Coordinating with your project teammates, discuss potentially related work for
your course project and identify at least 3 research papers (research
conference or journal papers, not news or magazine articles) for each member of
your team that are related to your class project (if you have 4 people on your
team you must find at least 12 different papers). For this homework, each of
you *must pick different papers from the other people in your group*.
For each paper you selected, write a one-paragraph summary of the paper plus a
one-sentence description about the similarities and differences between the
study described in that paper and the study you plan to do for your course
project.
Good ways to find papers include:
- Looking at the related readings for your project in [A1](A1.html)
- Looking through papers published in the most recent version (or the last few
years of) a conference that publishes papers in usable security and privacy.
Good conferences to check include [SOUPS](https://www.usenix.org/conference/soups2022/technical-sessions), [PETS](https://petsymposium.org/2022/program.php), and [USENIX Security](https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity22/technical-sessions). The other two top security and privacy conferences and the top
HCI conference also
sometimes publish high-qualtity work in this space, but fewer of the papers
they publish relate directly to the intersection of usability and security/privacy: [Oakland](https://www.ieee-security.org/TC/SP2022/program.html), [CCS](https://www.sigsac.org/ccs/CCS2022/program/accepted-papers.html), and [CHI](https://programs.sigchi.org/chi/2022/program/2-may).
- Once you have found at least one paper: the papers discussed in that paper's
related work section
- Once you have found at least one paper: later papers that cite that paper.
You can find these by searching for the paper on [Google Scholar](https://scholar.google.com) and then clicking on the "cited by" link under that paper.
**What to submit** See Part 4.
### Part 3: Related Work
Once you have each individually completed Part 2, work with your group to turn
your summaries into a related work section for your final paper. Note that a
related should not simply summarize each paper sequentially. Instead, you
should connect the papers to describe what is known about the area. You should
particularly note how your project differs from or builds upon this prior work.
I'd recommend taking a close look at the related work sections of the papers
you read to see examples of what this can look like.
**What to submit** See Part 4.
### Part 4: Feedback
Answer the following questions:
1. How long did you spend on this assignment?
2. Any comments or feedback? Things you found interesting? Things you found challenging? Things you found boring?
**What to submit** As a group, submit a single file named `related.pdf` to
assignment A6 that contains (1) your related work section (Part 3), (2) each of
your individual paper summaries (Part 2), and (2) your answers to the
feedback questions (you may answer these individually or as a group).
